Once Upon Forever

Once upon forever
Not so long ago
Somewhere not so far away
Somewhere you may know

A man loved a woman
And a woman loved a man
And there a love that lasts
For all time began

He loved to run his fingers
Through her raven hair
Onto the silk which was her skin
To feel her heart beat there

She used to lay her head
Upon his broad chest
To listen to his heart beat
Is what she loved best

And then one summer night
As they gazed up at the sky
He kissed her palms and whispered
Soothingly to her as she began to cry

He said "My love why do you cry
What deserves your tears
Is it a wish that was not fulfilled
Or something which you fear"

"My love you were right, the second time
I fear but just one thing
For I cannot tell what lies ahead"
She replied "or what the future brings"

"What if one of us should pass on
And the other remains alive
How could I cope with losing you
How could I survive"

A sorrow filled his eyes
As he searched for a reply
He had all but given up
When he looked up to the sky

He grasped her hands in his
And pointed to the sky
"That is where we will meet
When one of us should die

The second star from the bottom
Then one to the left
Remember that star for when you look at it
Your fears will be put to rest

For one day, upon that star
I'll be waiting for you
And when you find your way up to me
We'll leave this star, we two

We'll find our way to a better place
Where we'll be together eternally"
He gave her a tiny grin
And she smiled back gratefully

And for a while, the smiled stayed
But as always there must be tears
And they came, for only she remained
After all of those years

Her despair knew no bounds
It's web on her very soul
She tried to fight the thought of suicide
But it finally took control

She wandered to the very cliff
Where she once broke down and cried
But that was a million years ago
Before he had died

She stood at the very edge
Looking at the raging waves below
She took a deep breath
And then she was ready to go

She looked up for a final glance
And a single star took her breath
The second star from the bottom
Then one to the left

And in that star, she saw his face
By then she should have learned
When he made her a promise
He always kept his word

And slowly she stepped back to safety
And slowly tears began to fall
He really was up there waiting
But always with her through it all

Now the years have passed
Her raven hair is streaked with white
Her son was grown and being told
Of that one beautiful night

Where he had been created
And yet she had cried
But he made her that promise
To meet her in the sky

Now she said goodnight to the boy
Laid herself down to sleep
She dreamed of gentle fingers
Just feeling her heart beat

She dreamed she was not in her bed
No, but lying on his chest
And the thud-thud of his beating heart
Finally gave her rest

Her boy sat on a cliff
Looking at the stars
When suddenly on appeared
Coming from afar

It joined together with another one
And they shone so very bright
Then they both flew towards the heavens
And vanished from his sight

He stared a moment longer
And his mother's face wavered before his eyes
Then he finally understood everything
And through his tears, he waved goodbye
